The Question is an installation that is set up in a pitch dark space. There are several zones within the installation for the audience to find using the haptic lotus device.
These zones are made up of tactile sets, and when the audience find them, a corresponding sound track triggers in their headphones.
The growth of the Narrative or experience for the audience builds as they travel from zone to zone.
The story is a fragmented path following the thoughts and experiences of a blind geometer called kalabi, who is struggling with scientific, philosophical and cultural perspectives on the question of knowledge through sensory translation, and what ultimate impact this has on his identity.
The Question is partly instigated by the published dialogues between sighted philosopher Bryan Magee and blind philosopher Martin Milligan. Milligan disputed Magee’s claim that our knowledge of reality differs based on our experiential knowledge. Figures like physicists Kent Cullers and Richard Feynman, together with writers Kim Stanley Robinson and Simon Hayhoe, inspire The Question to explore this further.
Below are extracts from some of the scripted sound tracks from the different zones.
